New York Nursing CE Requirements

Renewal Cycle: 3 yrs

Nurses must complete a New York State-approved infection control and barrier precautions course appropriate to the professional's practice once every four (4) years. This training must be approved by either the State Education Department (SED) or the Department of Health (DOH). NYS mandates new RNs complete a one-time initial two (2) hour child abuse training.

Any prescriber with a DEA registration number must complete three (3) hours of course work or training in pain management, palliative care, and addiction. Course work must be completed once every three years, pursuant to PHL ยง3309-a(3). Prescribers must complete course work in the following eight topic areas:

  • New York State and federal requirements for prescribing controlled substances
  • Pain management
  • Appropriate prescribing
  • Managing acute pain
  • Palliative medicine
  • Prevention (screening and signs of addiction)
  • Responses to abuse and addiction
  • End of life care
